How often do kids need eye exams?

The American Optometric Association recommends the following eye exam schedule for children2:

  • One exam between 6 to 12 months: During your child’s first eye exam, their pediatric optometrist will assess their vision, eye alignment, and eye health to rule out any conditions.

  • Another exam between 3 to 5 years old: This exam checks for healthy eye development and vision problems that may affect learning.

  • School-age eye exams (6 to 17 years): Annual eye exams during the school years are crucial for detecting and addressing issues early on.

Signs of vision problems in children

Some kids won’t say they’re having trouble seeing, but there are common signs of vision problems to watch out for:

  • Squinting or covering one eye

  • Frequent eye rubbing

  • Headaches or complaints of tired eyes

  • Holding books or screens very close

  • Falling behind in school or avoiding reading altogether
