When most people think of eye exams, they think of updating their prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, comprehensive eye exams do much more than that. Through regular eye exams, optometrists can identify early signs of over 270 diseases1. These exams are crucial for assessing your overall eye health and detecting early signs of eye diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, often before you notice any symptoms.

What to expect during an eye exam

At Family Eye Clinic, we take the time to understand your concerns, assess your vision, and look for potential issues. A typical visit may include:

A review of your health and vision history

We start by discussing any symptoms or concerns, medications, family history of eye conditions, and your overall health.

Visual acuity test

Using a standard eye chart, we’ll check how clearly you see at different distances.

Refraction test

If you need glasses or contact lenses, we will use an autorefractor to quickly determine your exact prescription.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT)

OCT provides cross-sectional images of the retina to help detect early signs of eye diseases like macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease.

Visual field testing

This test checks your peripheral (side) vision and can help identify early signs of conditions like glaucoma or neurological concerns.

Eye pressure screening

We use iCare tonometry, a gentle, no-air-puff device, to check for early signs of glaucoma.

Optomap digital retinal imaging

This innovative technology allows us to capture a wide-angle image of the back of your eye and detect eye diseases before you have symptoms. In some cases, it can be used instead of dilation. An Optomap digital retinal exam captures approximately 80% of the retina in a single image vs. 15% with traditional methods.
